Lincoln Castle is a Norman fortress founded in 1068 by William the Conqueror on the site of the Roman settlement of Lindum Colonia, occupying a hilltop position that dominates the city of Lincoln. The castle comprises a substantial defensive circuit with two motte-and-bailey mounds within its walls, a characteristic feature of early Norman military architecture. The stone curtain walls, largely dating from the twelfth century onwards, enclose a roughly polygonal plan and represent one of the finest examples of Norman military engineering in England. As both a royal stronghold and, from medieval times, the seat of the sheriffs and later the location of the county gaol, Lincoln Castle served continuous administrative and military functions throughout the medieval period and beyond.
