History & Significance

Murder of Angelo Genna was a Indian Wars and Frontier Conflicts engagement fought in Illinois, 1925.

Angelo Genna, eldest of the Sicilian Genna brothers who controlled industrial-alcohol cooking on the Near West Side, was the first of the clan killed in the widening beer war. Pursued through the streets in a car chase by North Side gunmen, he crashed and was shot to death, retaliation entangled with the O'Banion killing and with rivalries over the Unione Siciliana presidency. His death began the rapid destruction of the Genna organization, which within weeks lost two more brothers and its street power. The Gennas had prospered by licensing home stills across the Italian district and selling the raw alcohol to Capone and others, and their fall reshaped the supply side of Chicago bootlegging while intensifying the feud between the North Side outfit and the Sicilian factions allied to Capone.
