A group of German Separatists founded a communal society in the Tuscarawas Valley in 1817 and maintained it for eighty years, building one of the longest-lived utopian communities in American history. Their village survives largely intact.

Gold discovered in the Black Hills in 1876 drew 25,000 prospectors into territory that was legally Lakota land. The town of Deadwood that grew in the canyon had Wild Bill Hickok shot dead in a saloon within weeks of its founding.

Cochise County, Arizona

Ed Schieffelin found silver in the Apache country of southern Arizona in 1877 and named his claim Tombstone because his fellow soldiers had told him that was all he would find. Four years later the gunfight at the OK Corral made it famous forever.

Madison County, Montana

Gold found in Alder Gulch in 1863 drew 10,000 miners to a remote Montana valley, produced over $90 million in gold, and created the territorial capital that hanged a sheriff for leading a gang of road agents. The gulch town survives almost intact.

Gold found near the Oregon Trail's famous mountain crossing in 1867 built a Wyoming town that became famous for two things: its gold, and the fact that its territory granted women the right to vote in 1869, the first government in the world to do so.

The Lincoln County War of 1878 was a range war between competing business factions that escalated into sustained armed conflict and produced the most famous outlaw in American history. The single main street where it was fought survives almost unchanged.

The gold rush to the Boise Basin in 1862 built the largest city in the Pacific Northwest almost overnight, extracting over $250 million in gold from Idaho's mountains. Idaho City was the most important city in the interior Northwest for a decade.

The second oldest city in South Carolina was founded in 1711 on a Sea Island where the Yemassee War began four years later. In 1861 the Union Navy captured Port Royal Sound and Beaufort became the center of an unprecedented social experiment in freedom.

Thomas Jefferson called the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers one of the most stupendous scenes in nature. John Brown chose the same spot in 1859 to launch a raid he hoped would end American slavery. It ended instead as a rehearsal for the Civil War.
