Georgia
Georgia had a modest Spanish presence in the late 16th century centered on Catholic missions, but the Spanish largely withdrew by the early 18th century and had little lasting historical influence on the territory. The British founded the Province of Georgia in 1732 under a charter granted to General James Oglethorpe by King George II, initially as a proprietary colony and later as a royal colony from 1751. The colony was designed both as a refuge for English debtors and as a military buffer zone protecting South Carolina and other southern British colonies from Spanish incursions out of Florida. In 1775, Georgia was the last of the Thirteen Colonies to support the American Revolution, ending the British colonial period.
Pre-contact era
The area that became Georgia was inhabited by Aboriginal tribes for thousands of years before European contact. At the time of European settlement, the territory was home to both the Creek and the Cherokee nations. European Americans pressured state and federal government to remove the Indians, which occurred in the 1830s under President Jackson.
Colonial history
The Spanish had little influence historically in what would become Georgia. They had settlements in nearby Florida but had largely withdrawn from the territory by the early 18th century. Most Spanish place names in Georgia date from the 19th century, not from the age of colonization.
Founded as a British proprietary colony in 1732, in 1751 it became a royal colony, taking over from the Trustees for the Establishment of the Colony of Georgia in America. The colony was envisioned as both a haven for English debtors and a buffer state defending southern British colonies from Spanish Florida.
