Brownrigg milefortlet 22 is a Roman fortification forming part of the coastal defensive system established along the Cumbrian shore during the second century AD. The structure belongs to the series of milefortlets constructed to regulate movement and control access along this strategic frontier zone. The site comprises the archaeological remains of a small fort, characteristic of the linear defence network that extended northwards from the main Hadrianic installations. Its position approximately 800 metres north east of the Cemetery Chapel reflects the planned spacing of such installations along this important maritime boundary of the Roman province.
