Overview

History & significance

Cissbury Ring is a multiphase hillforted settlement and flint extraction complex located near Worthing in West Sussex, encompassing remains spanning the Neolithic period through the Iron Age. The site comprises a substantial univallate hillfort with an internal area of approximately 24 hectares, encircled by a prominent chalk-cut rampart and ditch, which was constructed during the Iron Age, probably in the fourth or third century BC. Beneath and around the fort lie extensive Neolithic flint mines, among the most significant in southern Britain, where deep shafts were sunk to extract high-quality flint nodules for tool manufacture, occupation occurring intermittently from the early Neolithic onwards. The hillfort itself demonstrates evidence of Iron Age settlement and defensive provision, with archaeological investigation revealing occupation deposits and structural remains consistent with a productive and strategically important settlement during the late prehistoric period.

Cissbury Ring hillfort, prehistoric flint mine and associated remains is a scheduled monument protected by Historic England under reference 1015817. View the official record →
