Overview

History & significance

Cissbury Ring is a multiphase hillfort situated on the South Downs near Worthing in West Sussex, England. The site's earliest and most significant phase consists of extensive Neolithic flint mines, among the most important prehistoric flint extraction complexes in Britain, dating to approximately 4000 BCE and representing intensive organised mining activity. The hillfort itself was constructed during the Iron Age, likely in the 1st century BCE, with a substantial univallate rampart enclosing some 24 hectares and providing evidence of settlement activity. The combination of Neolithic mining shafts, Iron Age fortification and Roman period pottery finds makes Cissbury Ring a palimpsest of prehistoric and protohistoric occupation spanning several millennia.

Cissbury Ring hillfort, prehistoric flint mine and associated remains is a scheduled monument protected by Historic England under reference 1015817. View the official record →
