Gallaberry Hill is a Iron Age fort situated in Dumfriesshire, in south-west Scotland. The site occupies a commanding hilltop position where the underlying bedrock comprises sandstone, breccia and conglomerate of the Stewartry Group, laid down during the Early Permian period. This solid geological foundation would have provided a stable base for the fort's defensive earthworks.
The fort follows the typical hillfort pattern of its period, with banks and ditches defining its perimeter. The prominent topography of Gallaberry Hill offered natural defensive advantages, whilst the local geology of mixed sedimentary stone would have supplied material for construction. The site represents settlement and territorial control during the Iron Age, when such fortified positions were centres of regional significance in the lowlands and borderlands of what is now Scotland.
