Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian to mark and defend the north-western boundary of Roman Britain. This section at wall mile 66, extending from Stanwix Bank to Stainton in Cumberland, preserves remains of the stone wall itself together with its associated vallum, a substantial linear earthwork running parallel to the wall that formed part of the broader frontier system. The vallum comprises a central ditch flanked by two outer banks, a distinctive feature of the Hadrianic frontier designed to regulate movement and access to the military zone. The survival of both wall and vallum structures in this locality provides important archaeological evidence for understanding the physical layout and construction standards of this UNESCO World Heritage monument, which stretches across northern England for nearly eighty miles.
