Martello tower no 55 is a defensive coastal fortification constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, part of the extensive chain of Martello towers built along the Sussex coast in the early nineteenth century. The tower exhibits the characteristic cylindrical or near-cylindrical form typical of these structures, designed to provide enfilading fire along the shoreline and resist artillery bombardment. Built between 1805 and 1812 as part of the national defence programme against the threat of French invasion, the tower originally mounted a garrison and heavy guns on its roof platform. This example, situated near Normans' Bay in East Sussex, represents a significant surviving element of Britain's Regency-period coastal defence infrastructure and remains an important historical monument to the period's military engineering and strategic concerns.
