Membury Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress located near Axminster in Devon, England. The site comprises a substantial earthen mound with an associated bailey, characteristic of early Norman military architecture of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The castle occupies a commanding position in the landscape, though the superstructure has been largely lost to time, leaving only the earthwork remains visible today. As a representative example of Norman defensive engineering in the South West, it reflects the consolidation of Norman power in the region following the Conquest.
