Milton fort is an Iron Age hillfort located in Kirkcudbrightshire, south-west Scotland. The monument sits upon bedrock of the Hawick Group, a formation of wacke that dates to the Wenlock period of the Silurian. This underlying geology of hard sedimentary rock would have provided a stable foundation for the fort's defensive earthworks and structures, whilst the wacke itself could have been quarried for stone construction.
The fort represents a category of settlement typical of the Iron Age in southern Scotland, when communities built fortified enclosures on defensible sites.
