Owston Augustinian Abbey is a monastic house founded in the twelfth century in Leicestershire as a priory for Augustinian canons regular, subsequently advancing in status to abbey. The surviving archaeological remains include substantial earthwork features comprising six fishponds which served both practical and economic functions for the community, together with the foundations and traces of a medieval gatehouse and boundary features that defined the precinct. The site represents a significant example of Augustinian monastic settlement in the East Midlands, demonstrating the characteristic layout and infrastructure of an established religious community of considerable resources and organisation. The abbey's physical remains, preserved largely as earthworks and below-ground deposits, continue to yield archaeological evidence concerning medieval monastic life and the economic management of substantial religious estates.
