Pontefract Castle is a fortified site in West Yorkshire that developed through multiple periods of occupation and modification from the Norman period onwards. The castle originated as a motte and bailey fortress established in the late eleventh century, taking advantage of a naturally elevated position that had previously been occupied during the late Saxon period, when the site functioned as part of a cemetery and settlement with associated defensive ditch. The fortification was subsequently developed into a more elaborate medieval enclosure castle with enhanced stone structures during the later medieval centuries. The site's long history of occupation and its transition from earthwork defences to masonry construction reflect its importance as a strategic stronghold in Yorkshire's medieval landscape.
