History & significance

Stanwick is a Late Iron Age oppidum of substantial defensive significance, located in North Yorkshire near Scotch Corner. The site comprises an extensive system of earthen ramparts and ditches enclosing approximately eighty-five hectares, constructed during the 1st century AD and representing one of the largest fortified settlements of its period in Britain. Archaeological evidence indicates occupation continued through the Roman period and into later centuries, with the site subsequently functioning as a medieval settlement. The landscape also contains evidence of an early Christian church and associated sculpture, demonstrating the site's religious importance in the Early Medieval period, whilst later post-medieval activity included the creation of formal gardens and emparkment as part of estate management.
