The ’Siege of Pensacola Bay', was a 15-month battle between the Confederate States of America troops occupying 2 forts, and the Pensacola Navy Yard on Pensacola Bay and the Union fleet under Harvey Brown. The Confederates retained control of the city for a short time afterwards, but Fort McRee and the Pensacola Navy Yard were destroyed in a devastating 2-day artillery bombardment, where the U.S. out-fired the Confederates 5:1.

The war resolved the question of secession and ended American slavery, though Reconstruction would face sustained resistance in its attempt to secure civil rights for formerly enslaved people.
