History & Significance

Combats near Cassville was a Civil War engagement fought in Georgia, 1864.

At Cassville, Sherman's Union troops collided with Johnston's Confederate Army of Tennessee in one of the many engagements that marked the Atlanta campaign. Johnston had hoped to catch part of Sherman's command off guard, committing two of his three infantry corps to the effort, but his scheme fell apart when a Federal force materialized from a direction he had not anticipated. As the day wore on, he pulled his army back to fortified positions along a ridge, intending to hold there and let the enemy come to him. That plan too was undone, as a pair of his corps commanders informed him that Union artillery had found the flanks of their lines and rendered the ground indefensible. With darkness falling, Johnston made the call to pull his forces back across the Etowah River, settling on a fresh line of defense to the south.
