The Attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941, as Japan sought to advance its imperial ambitions in the Pacific. The strike was preceded by months of negotiations between the US and Japan over Pacific affairs, during which Japan demanded that the US end sanctions against it, cease aiding China in the Second Sino-Japanese War, and grant Japan access to resources in the Dutch East Indies. The US responded with the Hull note, which called for Japanese withdrawal from China and French Indochina. Japan's military leadership, viewing the US Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor since 1940 as an obstacle to its expansion, decided to launch a preemptive strike.
On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan launched a surprise military attack on the United States Pacific Fleet at the naval base at Pearl Harbor on Oahu, Hawaii Territory. The air raid was launched from Japanese aircraft carriers. Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, planned the attack as a strategic preemptive strike designed to neutralize American military capability in the Pacific and prevent interference with Japanese operations. Japan dispatched its naval attack group on November 26, 1941, positioning forces for the assault.
The attack had immediate and far-reaching consequences for the United States and World War II. At the time of the strike, the US was a neutral country in the global conflict. However, the Japanese surprise attack prompted the US to declare war on Japan the next day, decisively ending American neutrality and bringing the nation into World War II as a combatant against the Axis powers.
