Skirmishes at and near Funkstown was a Civil War engagement fought in Maryland, 1863.
On July 10, 1863, fighting broke out near Funkstown, Maryland, as part of the Gettysburg campaign that marked the American Civil War. The clash, later known as the Second Battle of Funkstown, saw the Army of the Potomac strike at the retreating Confederates. Having suffered defeat at Gettysburg, the Army of Northern Virginia was pulling back toward safer ground, and Union troops set upon the rear guard covering that withdrawal from Pennsylvania.
