During 1862, Mimbres Apache under leaders like Mangas Coloradas raided the mining settlements at Pinos Altos in southwestern New Mexico as part of broader Apache resistance to American encroachment on their territories. The skirmish reflected the escalating conflict between Apache groups and white miners in the region during the American Civil War period, when federal military presence was reduced. The Pinos Altos area remained a flashpoint of Apache-settler violence throughout the 1860s.
The Indian Wars encompass more than three centuries of armed conflict between the United States government, American settlers, and Indigenous nations — from the Powhatan Wars of the 1620s through the final Plains campaigns of the late 19th century. The eastern conflicts — King Philip's War (1675–1676), the Tuscarora War (1711–1715), and the Creek and Seminole Wars — largely ended organized Indigenous resistance east of the Mississippi by the 1840s.
