English forces cornered King Philip in Pocasset Swamp (modern-day Tiverton RI) but refused to enter the dense terrain. Philip escaped by raft across the Taunton River, carrying the war west to join the Nipmuc in the Connecticut River valley. The escape transformed a localized Plymouth conflict into a regionwide war.
