One of the most complete English defeats of King Philip's War. Captain Pierce led his company across the Blackstone River and was surrounded by a vastly superior Native force near present-day Central Falls, Rhode Island. Pierce and approximately 55 English soldiers and 11 allied Praying Indians were killed. The disaster occurred during the final phase of the war and shocked Plymouth Colony.
European colonization of North America accelerated after 1600, with England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands establishing competing settlements along the Atlantic coast, the St. Lawrence River, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Mississippi Valley. The French and Indian War (1754–1763), part of the global Seven Years' War, ended French power in North America and left Britain deeply in debt — triggering the taxation disputes that would lead to revolution.
