Iroquois raiding parties attacked Catawba towns in South Carolina in 1707 as part of ongoing inter-tribal conflicts during the colonial period. Carolina traders and colonial authorities intervened to protect the Catawba as valued trading partners and allies against Iroquois expansion southward.
European colonization of North America accelerated after 1600, with England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands establishing competing settlements along the Atlantic coast, the St. Lawrence River, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Mississippi Valley.
