The Crow Creek site did not end with the massacre. Survivors or a related group returned and dug an enormous V-shaped defensive ditch (3 meters deep, 3 meters wide) around the village — the most substantial defensive work documented in the late prehistoric northern Plains. The fortification's construction after the massacre documents both the survivors' fear and their continued occupation of the site. Documented by Willey (1990).
