Action near Rogersville was a Civil War engagement fought in Tennessee, 1863. It was a Confederate victory.
On the morning of November 6, 1863, fighting broke out in and around Rogersville, Tennessee, pitting the United States Army's 3rd Brigade, 4th Cavalry Division against Confederate forces made up of Jones' Brigade, the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, and the 8th Virginia Cavalry. Federal troops were largely caught off guard by the assault, and this element of surprise proved decisive. Brigadier General William E. Jones led the Confederates in seizing back control of Rogersville, and in the process his men also made off with a substantial cache of supplies held in the town's railroad storehouses.
