History & Significance

Action, Walker's Ford, Clinch River was a Civil War engagement fought in Tennessee, 1863. It was a Union victory.

At Walker's Ford on the Clinch River, three Confederate cavalry brigades under Brigadier General William T. Martin clashed with a Union cavalry brigade commanded by Colonel Felix W. Graham, part of the broader fighting tied to the Knoxville campaign. Martin's horsemen had first tried to corner Graham's men at Maynardville, Tennessee, but when that effort came up short, they set off toward Tazewell and ran into Graham's troopers just south of the ford early that morning. The Confederates initially gained the upper hand, pushing Graham's force backward. That advantage evaporated once Brigadier General Orlando B. Willcox showed up with a Union infantry brigade, driving the Southern cavalry into retreat. In response, Martin dispatched a brigade in an attempt to swing around and surround the Federals, only to have one of Graham's regiments hold the maneuver in check at a ford nearby. Facing this resistance, Martin's men pulled back toward Knoxville before long. Though Willcox's cautious advance did not manage to ease the pressure on Major General Ambrose Burnside's troops during the Siege of Knoxville, that relief would come soon after when Major General William T. Sherman arrived with a far larger force and finished what Willcox had started.
