Captain John Martin led an unauthorized expedition to seize Nansemond food stores during the Starving Time. The Nansemond repulsed the English and killed several soldiers. This early clash presaged the full-scale First Anglo-Powhatan War and demonstrated that Powhatan tribes would actively resist English territorial encroachment.
European colonization of North America accelerated after 1600, with England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands establishing competing settlements along the Atlantic coast, the St. Lawrence River, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Mississippi Valley.
