The day before the main Bad Axe battle, the armed steamboat Warrior arrived and opened cannon fire on the Sauk who were attempting to cross the river under a white flag. The preliminary attack killed ~23 Sauk and prevented their escape. The Warrior's return the next day during the main battle completed the slaughter.
