On May 23, 1862, fighting broke out at Lewisburg, in Greenbrier County, Virginia, as part of the wider conflict between the states. Colonel George Crook led a Union brigade that overwhelmed Confederate troops under Brigadier General Henry Heth, despite being outnumbered by Heth's men. In the chaos of retreat, the Confederates fled across the Greenbrier River, setting fire to the bridge behind them as they went.
