Kentucky was organized as a district of Virginia and held ten statehood conventions between 1784 and 1792 to negotiate separation terms with the Virginia General Assembly. The Virginia legislature consented to separation in 1789 on the condition that Kentucky honor existing land grants and debts. Kentucky was admitted as the fifteenth state on June 1, 1792, the first state admitted west of the Appalachian Mountains.
