About this property

Carlisle ( kar- LYLE , locally KAR -lyle ; from the Cumbric: Caer Luel ) is a city located in the Cumberland district of Cumbria, England. It is the largest settlement and only city in Cumbria. In 2021, it had a population of 77,730. Carlisle was founded as a Roman settlement called Luguvalium to serve forts along Hadrian's Wall, though it may have earlier origins. Nicknamed the 'Great Border City' due to its proximity to Scotland (being located eight miles or thirteen kilometres south of the current Anglo-Scottish border), the city and its castle became an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages.

Federal Designation

The National Register of Historic Places, administered by the National Park Service, is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical, architectural, archaeological, engineering, or cultural significance. Listing on the National Register recognizes a property's importance to American history but does not place restrictions on private owners; it does, however, make properties eligible for federal historic preservation tax incentives and enables consideration in federal planning decisions. This property is recorded in the National Register under reference number 89001599. It was listed on October 25, 1989.
