About this property

The Grant Birthplace (also known as the U.S. Grant Birthplace) is a historic house museum in Point Pleasant, Monroe Township, Clermont County, Ohio, United States. Built in 1817 near a local tannery, the one-story frame house was the birthplace, on April 27, 1822, of Ulysses S. Grant, who went on to command the Union Army during the American Civil War and to serve as the 18th President of the United States. Grant lived in the house for less than a year before his family relocated to nearby Georgetown, Ohio. After Grant's death in 1885, the house was dismantled and relocated several times for public display before being returned to its original foundation in 1936. It is now operated as a museum by the Ohio History Connection in partnership with Historic New Richmond, Inc. In 1998 the birthplace and several associated commemorative sites were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the U.S. Grant Birthplace and Grant Commemorative Sites Historic District.
