About this property

The Honey Creek Swiss Rural Historic District is a national historic district in rural Sauk County, Wisconsin. The district encompasses 46 farms over 12 square miles (31 km 2 ) which were settled by Swiss Americans in the 1840s and 1850s. The settlers were Walser people from the canton of Graubünden, and the Honey Creek area remained ethnically homogenous through the end of the nineteenth century. The district includes substantial log and stone houses from the period of early settlement, reflecting the wealth of the new settlers, as well as timber-framed homes within the fachwerk tradition. Later houses in the district reflect contemporary American architectural forms, such as the gable-ell pattern house.

Federal Designation

The National Register of Historic Places, administered by the National Park Service, is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical, architectural, archaeological, engineering, or cultural significance. Listing on the National Register recognizes a property's importance to American history but does not place restrictions on private owners; it does, however, make properties eligible for federal historic preservation tax incentives and enables consideration in federal planning decisions. This property is recorded in the National Register under reference number 89000484. It was listed on April 5, 1990.
