American musicologist (1915–2002)
Biography
Alan Lomax was born in Austin, Texas, in 1915 and died in 2002. He conducted extensive field recordings of folk music throughout the twentieth century, working initially with his father John Lomax and subsequently alone and with collaborators. He directed the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress, where he recorded thousands of songs and interviews on aluminum and acetate discs. Through recordings, concerts, and radio broadcasts in the United States and England, he participated in preserving folk music traditions and the emergence of folk revivals in both countries during the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s.
