Anna J. Cooper was born enslaved in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1858. She attended Oberlin College in Ohio, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1884 and a master's degree in mathematics in 1887. At sixty-six, she completed doctoral studies at the University of Paris. She lived in Washington, D.C. and worked as an author, educator, activist, political theorist, sociologist, historian, and suffragist until her death in 1964.
