Biography

Barbara Jordan was born in Houston, Texas in 1936 and worked as a politician, attorney, educator, lawyer, writer, and women's rights activist until her death in 1996. A member of the Democratic Party, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate since Reconstruction and the first woman descendant of American slavery elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She was one of the first two African Americans elected to the U.S. House from the former Confederacy since 1901, alongside Andrew Young of Georgia.
