Benjamin Thompson was born in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1753 and died in 1814. During the American War of Independence, he supported the Loyalist cause and commanded the King's American Dragoons. After the war ended in 1783, he moved to London, where he received a knighthood from George III in 1784 in recognition of his administrative abilities.
