Bruce McCandless II was born in Boston in 1937 and worked as a Navy officer, aviator, electrical engineer, and astronaut. During his first Space Shuttle mission in 1984, he completed the first untethered spacewalk using the Manned Maneuvering Unit. He died in 2017.
