Buddy Bolden was born on September 6, 1877, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He worked as a cornet player, bandleader, conductor, and hairdresser. Contemporaries and later jazz scholars regarded him as a key figure in the development of a New Orleans style of ragtime music, or "jass", which later came to be known as jazz. He died on November 4, 1931.
