Biography

Charles William Sweeney was born on 27 December 1919 in Lowell, Massachusetts, and served as an officer in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He piloted Bockscar on 9 August 1945, the aircraft that carried the Fat Man atomic bomb to Nagasaki. Following his separation from active duty at the war's end, he joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard and eventually attained the rank of major general. He died on 16 July 2004.
