Biography

Chuck Close was born on July 5, 1940, in Monroe, Washington. He worked as a painter, photographer, printmaker, draftsperson, and collagist, creating large-scale photorealist and abstract portraits of himself and others using a large format camera. In 1988, after becoming paralyzed by an occlusion of the anterior spinal artery, he adapted his painting style and working methods. He died on August 19, 2021.
