Biography

Dean Acheson was born in Middletown, Connecticut in 1893 and worked as a diplomat, politician, and lawyer. From 1949 to 1953, he served as the 51st U.S. Secretary of State under Harry S. Truman, during which time he shaped the administration's foreign policy. Earlier, between 1945 and 1947, he was Truman's principal foreign policy advisor in the early Cold War period and contributed to the design of the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He maintained a private law practice from July 1947 to December 1948. Acheson died in 1971.
