Francis Richard Scobee was born on May 19, 1939, in Cle Elum, Washington. He served as a military officer and astronaut. He commanded the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-51-L mission on January 28, 1986, when the shuttle suffered catastrophic booster failure during launch, and he was killed.
