Dolley Madison was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, in 1768 and died in 1849. She held Washington social functions to which she invited members of both political parties. She performed the function of president's spouse during the presidency of James Madison from 1809 to 1817, and had sometimes performed this function earlier for the widowed Thomas Jefferson.
