Biography
Dorothy Hansine Andersen was born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1901 and worked as a pathologist, pediatrician, and physician. At Babies Hospital of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, she identified cystic fibrosis and determined that it was inherited through a recessive gene, while also developing diagnostic tests and treatments for the disease. She described Glycogen storage disease type IV, which became known as Andersen's Disease. Her research on heart malformations contributed to the development of open heart surgery and surgeon training. She died in 1963.
