Biography

Dwight Lyman Moody was born in Northfield, Massachusetts in 1837 and died in 1899. He worked as a shoe salesman before leaving that business to pursue revivalism, and served with Union troops during the Civil War through the YMCA's Christian Commission. Moody founded the Moody Church, Northfield School, Mount Hermon School, Moody Bible Institute, and Moody Publishers, and built a major evangelical center in Chicago that remained active. He toured the country and the British Isles with singer Ira Sankey, drawing large crowds through his speaking.
