Biography

Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1894 and died in 1962. He worked as a poet, painter, playwright, and writer. During World War I he served as an ambulance driver and was held in an internment camp, an experience that led to his novel The Enormous Room, published in 1922. His first poetry collection, Tulips and Chimneys, appeared in 1923 and displayed his early work with unconventional grammar and typography. Among his four plays were HIM (1927) and Santa Claus: A Morality (1946), and he also wrote EIMI (1933), a travelog of the Soviet Union, and delivered the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures in poetry, which were published as i—six nonlectures in 1953.
