Biography

Edward Mandell House was born in Houston, Texas, in 1858 and worked as a diplomat and politician. He advised President Woodrow Wilson and was known as Colonel House, though this title was honorary and he had not performed military service. House managed Wilson's presidential campaign beginning in July 1911 and served as Wilson's chief adviser on European politics and diplomacy during World War I, holding the position of executive agent without taking formal office. He was one of five American commissioners to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, after which Wilson ended their relationship, believing House had deceived him there. House died in 1938.
