Biography

Eugene McCarthy was born on March 29, 1916, in Watkins, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1949 to 1959 and then in the U.S. Senate from 1959 to 1971, representing Minnesota for over 22 years. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, McCarthy sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968 on an anti–Vietnam War platform, challenging incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson, and ran for president four additional times. He died on December 10, 2005.
