Biography
Fisher Ames was born in Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1758 and worked as a politician, lawyer, and writer. He served as a Representative in Congress from Massachusetts's 1st Congressional District for four terms during the Washington Administration, where he became a leader of the Federalist Party in the House. He participated in his state's constitutional ratifying convention, sat on the committee that inaugurated President Washington, helped frame the wording of the First Amendment regarding freedom of religion in 1789, and delivered a defense of the Jay Treaty in 1796 that secured sufficient votes for its appropriation. After leaving Congress in 1797 due to declining health, he continued writing as a Federalist essayist for ten years until his death on July 4, 1808.
