Biography

Florence Bascom was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1862 and worked as a geologist, educator, editor, and author. She earned her PhD in geology from Johns Hopkins University in 1893, the first woman to receive a doctorate from that institution in any field. In 1896 she became the first woman employed by the United States Geological Survey. Bascom founded the geology department at Bryn Mawr College, where she trained women geologists.
